What is Pegasus Leadership Academy?

The Leadership Academy embraces youth involvement and brings together young volunteers to develop their skills whilst volunteering within gymnastics.  The Leadership Academy (LA) is run by the LA Captain(s) with support from club staff. Leaders attend specific training courses for their development and are provided with the opportunity to volunteer at events and to assist coaches with their classes.  Along with the serious side of the Academy comes a chance for young people with similar interests to get together as a group and have fun.

Structure of the Pegasus Leadership Academy

There are 3 Leadership Academies at Pegasus:

The Purple Wings Junior Academy is an introduction to leadership and recognises that a number of young people in year 5/6 at primary school play an active role in buddying, mentoring and generally assisting within their school and may be keen to continue developing their skills within the club.

Members of the Blue Wings Academy will have the opportunity to follow the Pegasus Leadership Academy programme which is designed to create a structure which young people can follow to help them develop as leaders. The programme introduces young leaders to the various roles and opportunities available within the sport by helping them to identify their strengths and the areas they enjoy; encouraging them to stay them within the sport for longer. Blue Wings leaders will be invited to attend introductory training modules in coaching, judging, volunteering and events.

Membership of the Green Wings Academy is by selection only.

Green Wing leaders will follow the British Gymnastics My Leadership Academy Programme which has five different ‘topic’ areas to complete and leads to certification in 1st4sport Level 2 Award in ‘Leadership through Gymnastics’ (QCF).

On completion of Intro to modules in coaching, judging, volunteering and events, Green Wings leaders will have the opportunity to attend full coaching and judging qualification courses.

Green Wings Academy members may be nominated to attend the British Gymnastics Regional Event – Aspire to Lead and, for those aged between 18 – 25yrs, the British Gymnastics National Event - Aspire to Shine.

Green Wings Leaders will play a role in working with Coaches and the LA Captains to support the running of the LA programme at Pegasus and mentoring the new/younger LA members. They could become Leadership Academy Captains themselves.

For anyone who is interested in a career in sport but doesn’t want to go through the university route, there will be an opportunity to apply to become a Pegasus Apprentice and gain nationally recognised qualifications, have hands on experience in the workplace and earn a wage. Full time Level 2 and Level 3 (Advanced) Sport Apprenticeship will be available to 1 – 2 young people aged 16 – 18 years each year.

The cost of Intro to modules, courses, British Gymnastics regional and national events, and accreditation & registration fees to 1st4Sport will be paid for by Pegasus.

Leadership Academies achieve the following outcomes:
